It’s particularly excellent to read creative contemplation on objects on the internet as well as follow a creative research process – I wish more artists would publish this.
Congratulations, this is really exciting – I’ll be following!
Lucy
I am delighted to have found the site and to be in touch with the project. It’s exciting to come across such an original endeavour, determined to harness the power of the internet.

What appeared to be a few minutes surfing these pages was actually two hours of pure engrossment. I was totally enthralled by the stories, the history and the objects themselves, but even more so by Sharon and Hazel’s enthusiastic, unravelling, documented journey. You cannot help but be drawn into the story of Mary Greg. It’s also great to be privy to an artist’s mind at work and I really look forward to seeing the final pieces to this delightful project. It’s like a never-ending jigsaw puzzle – will you ever be able to finish it! Sarah
Thank you Sarah, glad you enjoyed browsing the site..I never want to finish this project..
Me neither, it’s a fabulous project to be involved with and I hope others will get involved too. Artistic responses would be welcomed, any takers?!! Sharon
Hi Sharon
As mentioned at the weekend, I’d love to get involved with this project! What do I need to do?
Clare
Hi Clare, lovely to bump into you at Collect! Glad you’d like to get involved with the project. Have a closer look at the images of the objects in ‘The Collection’ to see if there is anything there that you feel inspired to respond to and also drop in on previous posts on the site as there are some potentially interesting leads there too! There are also some objects in the Object Memories Showcase in the Craft and Design Gallery at Manchester Art Gallery, pop in next time you’re passing and have a look.
I’ll get in touch with the team at the Art Gallery to see when we might be able to organise a handling session in the stores (that’s when the fun really starts!!).
If anyone else reading would also like to make a response to the collection then please leave a message and we’ll try to book you in too. Sharon
Sharon – I have had a great time browsing this exhibition – I can see why you were so animated about it on Thursday evening. As you are aware I am not known for my artistic appreciation (!!) but the historical aspects of this collection really are fascinating – I love how you have pursued the various strands of Marys life and how the students are making connections to their modern day lives as shown on the video. Thank you for the insight into what you do too….Will send the link to George, I think he will enjoy it.
This sounds like an amazing project and opportunity, I’d love the chance to be involved if you have room for more participants.
Sue
Hi,
I’m a student at the University of Manchester doing my MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies and I’m currently working on my final dissertation. I would like to include this project as one of my case studies and would love to speak to Sharon and Hazel and the staff at Manchester Art Gallery. I tried the email addresses suplied on this site but havn’t had any look so thought I’d try the blog itself! Please can you get in touch…
grace
Hi Grace, sorry for not getting back to you earlier (it’s a busy time of year assessment wise!). How can we help you? If you have any specific questions then do email again and I’ll watch out and respond as soon as I can. Sharon
Hi Sharon,
Thak you for your response – email sent!
Grace
Ive found great inspiration from the mary greg collection on display in Manchester Art Galley. I completed a piece of work as a direct response to christening gown on display & can see an influence of the collection in much of my work. I would have really liked to have known this lady and would love nothing more than a rummage through items not on display and or get involved in anyway.
Thanks for your feedback Joanne. At the moment the project is on something of a back burner following re-organisation at the gallery, but do keep checking in.
